Kaladar Cactus

For the past number of years, several members of the Ottawa and Area Cactus & Succulent Group have been monitoring the ongoing status of the "Kaladar Cactus", the name coined for a small wild population of the Brittle Prickly Pear, Opuntia fragilis found near Kaladar, Ontario. This species is typically found in western Canada with the nearest population located over 1000 km to the west. Because of the vulnerability of this population, the precise location is kept confidential.

As a result of monitoring the Kaladar Cactus, club members Ken Hancock and Rob Huntley, along with Stephen Darbyshire of the Agriculture Canada Botany Department developed a paper documenting our observations at the site. The paper has been published in the British Cactus & Succulent Journal.
